US VIPER programme for radiation detection, monitoring reaches milestone B
It has been announced that the United States' Joint Project Manager for CBRN Integrated Early Warning - which is part of the Capability Program Executive for CBRN Defense - has reached a milestone B decision for the "Vehicle Integrated Platform Enhanced RADIAC" technology, abbreviated to VIPER.
An article published by 75th US Army Reserve Innovation Command on 19 August 2026 noted that the technology was originally developed by the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command, and is a next-generation radiation detection and monitoring system that can be integrated into US Army ground and aviation platforms.
VIPER's primary mission is to protect platform crews and equipment from unavoidable radiological and nuclear hazards, and warfighters will use VIPER to detect potential radiological sources and to monitor health and safety.
The milestone B decision officially launches VIPER as a Program of Record and moves it into the engineering and manufacturing development phase. During this phase, the Joint Project Manager for CBRN Integrated Early Warning will develop, build, test and evaluate the VIPER technology to verify that all operational and implied requirements are met to support production, development and sustainment decisions.
