Oman is hosting a four-day regional training workshop on response to medical emergencies related to CBRN incidents, as well as medical evacuation.

According to the Oman News Agency, the workshop began on Sunday 27 September. The government is being represented by the Ministry of Health’s National Centre for Health Emergency and Risk Management, which acts in cooperation with the World Health Organization.

National medical teams from Oman and a number of countries from the eastern Mediterranean region and Europe are participating, including Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Türkiye and Ukraine. Partners from Médecins Sans Frontiers are also in attendance.

Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Busafi, Director of the National Centre for Health Emergency and Risk Management at the Ministry of Health, noted that the workshop provides a platform that brings together emergency response specialists, fosters the exchange of expertise and consolidates coordination among the countries of adjoining regions.

For his part, Dr. Asmus Hammerich, WHO’s representative in Oman, said that the hosting of the workshop aligns with the country's health priorities and reflects the aspirations and objectives of Oman Vision 2040.

Dr. Asmus noted that the workshop comprises three key specialisations: preparedness for and clinical management of CBRN incidents; burn care; and medical evacuation. He added that, while each of these areas is distinct, emergency situations require the integration of capabilities, the coordination of efforts and implementation of clear operational workflows.

The workshop aims to complement the international accreditation procedure for the National Medical Emergency Team, and therefore involves coordination with the “Medical City for Military and Security Services”, the University Medical City and the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, in addition to the Health Ministry’s institutions.
