Man arrested in Germany on suspicion of improper handling of radioactive materials
A 24-year-old man has been arrested in the Saarland region of Germany on suspicion of improper handling of radioactive materials.
A large emergency response consisting of radiation protection authorities, the fire department, specialised CBRN units and other agencies was reported to have been deployed to the town of St. Ingbert on Tuesday 4 August.
An announcement published by the Saarland police reported that initial investigations indicated the material in question was naturally occurring rock with inherent radioactivity, and may be contaminated with other heavy metals.
"Mechanical processing can release both these heavy metals and radioactive particles," the statement added. "The resulting dust poses a health risk upon direct, unprotected contact, as it can be inhaled, primarily through the respiratory system."
A further statement issued the same day confirmed that elevated radiation levels had been detected during the investigation, rendering the apartment uninhabitable until it had undergone cleaning and clearance testing. In addition to this property, police confirmed they were searching another property where the 24-year-old was also suspected of storing radioactive materials.
Police said that there was no danger to the general public and assured that measures were being taken to identify any potential hazard early, assess it professionally and eliminate it if necessary. An investigation is ongoing.
