Kazakhstan, Switzerland to deepen nuclear safety and waste cooperation
Kazakhstan and Switzerland are looking to strengthen their cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, nuclear safety and radioactive waste management, following a series of meetings in Bern on 20 October 2026, according to Kazakhstan's Nuclear Energy Agency via Qazinform News.
The Kazakh delegation, which included representatives of the National Nuclear Center and the country's embassy in Switzerland, met Benoît Revaz, director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. Talks centred on exchanging expertise in nuclear regulation and on measures to ensure safety, with the aim of bringing Kazakhstan's national nuclear and radiation regulatory framework in line with international standards and Swiss experience.
The delegation also met NAGRA, the Swiss organisation specialising in radioactive waste management. Future work with Kazakhstan's National Nuclear Center will build on a previously signed memorandum of understanding, under which a roadmap for the safe management of radioactive waste has been drawn up.
Kazakh officials stressed the need for a modern national waste management system. The country has enacted a law covering every stage of the process, from waste generation and temporary storage to final disposal. The agency said that studying Swiss practice and applying international best practice will be important for delivering national projects in the sector.
