Project Salt Box has reported that the United States' Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) has spent $1.3 million USD on robot dogs made by Boston Dynamics.

According to Project Salt Box, the agency bought the robots without seeking competing bids, and chose a version built to detect CBRN hazards. The purchase comes a month after the agency disclosed plans to buy the machines, and the purchase was never posted on the government’s contract opportunities website.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement signed the $1,304,296 purchase order on Friday 25 September with RADeCO Inc., an authorised distributor and industry partner of Boston Dynamics.

The order runs until 24 November and covers “Cerberus Spot quadruped robots and accessories” for the agency’s Office of Firearms and Tactical Programs, according to the record.

"RADeCO sells the Cerberus as a customised version of the Boston Dynamics Spot robot and describes it as a fully integrated platform for explosive ordnance disposal and for CBRN detection," wrote Project Salt Box.
