Five suspected ISWAP terrorists killed in premature IED explosion

Five suspected terrorists belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) group have reportedly been killed in a premature explosion while assembling an IED in the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, north-east Nigeria.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, reported on 4 August that the incident occurred at Maina Daya Village, about 29 kilometres east of the city of Monguno. Those killed are reported to have included Usman Dan Fulani, described as an ISWAP medical officer, alongside two foreign Arab IED technicians and two ISWAP bomb-making experts.

The incident occurred while the terrorists were allegedly preparing IEDs for possible use along key military supply routes. The loss of experienced bomb-makers is believed to represented a setback to the ISWAP IED network and could temporarily weaken the group’s ability to carry out attacks in the area.

Nigerian government forces have been directed to exploit the development by intensifying patrols, cordon-and-search operations, and precision offensive actions around the affected areas.

Zagazola Makama wrote that the incident highlights the "persistent threat posed by ISWAP’s use of IEDs", noting that they remain "one of the group’s primary tactics against military convoys and civilian traffic" in north-east Nigeria.
